What causes swelling of the eyes and face in the morning?
“Morning swelling is usually caused by fluid buildup during the night. Lying down can cause fluid buildup around your eyes and face. Other common causes include too much salt, alcohol, dehydration, allergies, lack of sleep, and even crying,” Dr. Westbay told E!
“Hormonal fluctuations may also play a role. Aging is another factor, as loss of collagen and facial support can lead to fluid accumulation in areas like the under-eyes, leading to visible swelling,” Dr. Sridharani said.
Expert tips to get rid of puffiness on face and eyes
The secret to winding down is to start the night before. “First and foremost, getting enough sleep is most important. Using some pillows and slightly elevating your head by 10 to 30 degrees will help gravity drain and reduce fluid retention in your face,” Dr. Sridharani told E! “It’s also important to stay well hydrated, as dehydration can cause fluid retention and paradoxically worsen swelling.”
Dr. Westbay recommends rinsing your face with cold water or using chilled products to make an immediate difference. “Long-term incorporation of lymphatic drainage massage moves excess fluid and reduces a ‘stagnant’ appearance,” she says.
