The day after OpenAI reviewed its relationship with microsoft So to run all products on any cloud, the artificial intelligence company said its model will be available via Amazon web service.
Through Amazon Bedrock, AWS customers can experiment with OpenAI models as well as Codex agents for writing code, the companies announced Tuesday. This service is expected to be generally available in the coming weeks.
“This is something our customers have been asking us for for a really long time,” AWS CEO Matt Garman said at a launch event in San Francisco.
Previously, developers could take advantage of OpenAI’s so-called open-weight model, which was introduced to AWS in August.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, currently in court across the Bay Bridge in Oakland in a lawsuit against Elon Musk, sent a recorded message about the announcement.
“I wish I could have been with you in person today, but I have no plans today,” Altman said in the video. “But I wanted to send a short message because we are very excited about our partnership with AWS and what it means for our customers. I also wanted to thank Matt and the entire AWS team.”
Powered by OpenAI, the new service, called Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, will enable the construction of highly customized agents that incorporate memory of previous interactions, the companies said.
Microsoft was a key supplier of computing power for OpenAI even before ChatGPT was launched in 2022. Dennis Dresser, head of revenue at OpenAI, told employees in a memo earlier this month that while the long-standing relationship with Microsoft is important, “it also limits our ability to meet businesses where they are, and for many that is Bedrock.”
On Monday, OpenAI and Microsoft announced significant changes to their agreement that would allow AI companies to cap revenue-sharing payments and serve customers of any cloud provider. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy called the announcement “very interesting” in a post on X, adding that more details would be shared on Tuesday.
OpenAI and Amazon are also coming closer in other ways.
OpenAI announced a $38 billion deal with Amazon Web Services in November, days after announcing that Microsoft Azure would be the only cloud to service application programming interface (API) products built with third parties.
Three months later, OpenAI expanded its relationship with Amazon, which announced it would invest $50 billion in Altman’s company. OpenAI announced that it will use 2 gigawatts worth of custom AWS Trainium chips to train its AI models.
The partnership was announced after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI missed internal goals for users and revenue. Shares of AI hardware companies, including chipmakers Nvidia and Broadcom, fell on the report, which also highlighted internal disagreements over spending plans.
“This is ridiculous,” Sam Altman and OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar said in a statement on the matter. “We are completely aligned on buying as much computing as we can and working hard together every day.”
