Microsoft On Tuesday, employees said they were expected to work three days a week starting next year.

Employees working near Microsoft’s headquarters or Puget Sound area in Redmond, Washington, must be in the office three days a week starting in February. The policy will then be extended to other US locations and then expanded to international offices.

The company has emailed employees living within 50 miles of Microsoft’s office around Puget Sound on the shift, the company said.

“As we build AI products that define this era, we need the kind of energy and momentum that comes from smart people who work side by side, and we need to solve challenging problems together.”

Microsoft previously had a policy that dates back to the Covid-19 pandemic. This allowed most employees to work half the time from home without the manager’s approval.

Microsoft has held several layoffs this year, but Coleman wrote, “This update is not about reducing staffing,” and instead “working together in a way that can meet the needs of our customers.”

In its latest revenue report in July, Microsoft reported better than expected results, temporarily lifting the company’s market capitalization by more than $4 trillion.
