Mexican authorities said they have arrested former soccer player Omar Bravo, 45, on suspicion of child sexual abuse.
The Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement that the investigation allegedly abused a teenage girl several times in recent months, and that she may have committed similar behavior before.
He was arrested during an operation in Zapopan city and was expected to appear in court soon.
Bravo played as a forward for Chivas de Guadalajara and became the club’s highest goal scorer ever. He also played for the Mexican national team at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The Associated Press was unable to immediately contact Bravo’s attorneys.
On Bravo’s Instagram account, fans commented on their latest September 8th post, which did not mention the accusation. Some expressed their sadness, but he said he wanted the allegations to be untrue, saying he was their idol.
Prosecutors said the investigation would continue.
