Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said Dani Carvajal could still be included in the World Cup squad, but the right-back needs to prove his fitness and form after sustaining a leg injury during training with his club Real Madrid last week.
“Carvajal is a very important person in our dressing room,” coach de la Fuente said on Wednesday.
“I actually spoke to him yesterday so I know what’s going on. He doesn’t have any specific injuries, nothing serious, but he needs time to get back to his normal level.
“We’ll see in the remaining games whether he can really take the chance and perform.”
De la Fuente added that he would understand if Carvajal, who played just one game for Spain in 2025, was left out of the squad for the World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
He joins the list of players who suffered injuries in the weeks before the World Cup, along with Spanish teammate Lamine Yamal.
Carvajal, 34, is nearing the final week of his contract with Real and has struggled to play games this season amid competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Spain begins their World Cup match against Cape Verde on June 15th, and will also face Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
