Amelia Shepherd is taking some time off from Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Caterina Scorsone’s Grey’s Anatomy character revealed in the October 16 episode that she plans to take a break following the tragic hospital explosion in the season 21 finale that killed Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales) in the season 22 premiere.
However, the actress’ absence won’t be as long as E! News has learned that after a short hiatus, her character will return to the operating room in 2026.
The series revealed that Amelia will take a leave of absence from her neurosurgical role during the show’s milestone 450th episode.
And as the show continues to be a success, creator Shonda Rhimes candidly said she never imagined it would go this far, and now she doesn’t know when or how it will ultimately end.
“I think around episode 150, I knew how it was going to end,” Shonda, who stepped down as showrunner in 2015, told Today’s Craig Melvin on the October 13 episode of NBC’s morning show. “Right now it’s 450. I don’t know. I mean, I didn’t know if I could make it through season four or five. So the fact that we’re here at 22, season 22, it’s insane.”
