Sometimes life really imitates art.
And for TikToker-turned-podcaster-turned-author Brooke Averick, her upcoming debut novel, Phoebe Berman’s Gonna Lose It, and the writing of its lovable, anxious protagonist, have had more of an impact on her real life than she could have imagined.
Because while readers may be inspired by Phoebe’s determined journey to lose her virginity in her final months before turning 30 after a lifetime of dating-related anxiety, Brooke also walks away with a lesson learned from her protagonist.
“When it comes to dating,” she told E! News in an exclusive interview, “Before I started writing, like Phoebe, I had pretty limited dating experience, and actually writing Phoebe was what inspired me to start putting myself out there more.”
But while Brooke is also open about her own experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), her and Phoebe’s journeys soon diverge.
“I think Phoebe’s thought spirals mirror mine exactly, but the reason I was able to create a boundary between me and Phoebe was because Phoebe reacted to her thought spirals so differently than I did,” the 29-year-old explained. “I’m definitely type B.”
