Gordon has scored 17 goals in all competitions for Newcastle this season, including 10 in 12 Champions League games.

Anthony Gordon’s lifelong dream of playing for Barcelona has become a reality, with the England winger also showing off the surprising feat of answering questions in Spanish when he was announced by the La Liga club.

Barcelona have signed Gordon from Newcastle United on a five-year contract, the Spanish champions announced on Friday.

Financial details were not disclosed, but British media reported that Barça offered the 25-year-old an initial fee of 80 million euros ($93.29 million) and additional options.

“As soon as I found out that Barça were interested, I had no doubts. This is what I dreamed of as a child,” Gordon said, surprising reporters by speaking part of the press conference in fluent Spanish.

“I wanted to speak Spanish because when I was a kid, I believed, believe it or not, that I would play for Barça.

“I had a physiotherapist in Newcastle and we talked every day. And I said to him, ‘I want to learn Spanish because one day I’m going to play for Barça.’

Gordon has scored 17 goals in all competitions for Newcastle this season, including 10 in 12 Champions League games.

“He arrived at the club as the player who initiated the most dribbles after being top scorer for Newcastle United last season,” Barcelona said in a statement.

“Gordon made an impression in his three appearances against Barça in the Champions League last season.”

However, Newcastle struggled to make any progress in the Premier League, finishing 12th and missing out on qualification for European competition.

Earlier this month, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted Gordon may have played his final game for the club when he was linked with a move to Bayern Munich, saying there had been “discussions that could potentially be the case”.

However, it was Barcelona who made the sudden decision to sign Gordon, who is a member of England’s World Cup squad.

“It’s very exciting for me to play with Ramin (Yamal) and the other players,” Gordon said. “The more quality players you have around you, the better you become. There’s a reason why they’re at the top level. They’re the best players in the world.”

“They have very high quality, and that was the case when we played them at St. James Park. We couldn’t switch the ball.”

Newcastle drew 1-1 with Barcelona in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg at home this season, before losing to the Spaniards 8-3 on aggregate.

Signed from Everton in January 2023 for £45 million ($60.55 million), Gordon made 152 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 39 goals and providing 28 assists, helping them win the League Cup last year, ending a 70-year trophy drought.

Gordon’s England team-mate Marcus Rashford joined Barça on a season-long loan from Manchester United and helped the Catalan club retain the La Liga title.

Rashford has scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions for Barcelona, but Barcelona are yet to make the move permanent. The Athletic reports that Barça have a €30 million option to sign Rashford, which expires on June 15th.

Gordon joins a growing list of England players planning to trade overseas, including Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham and Al Ahly forward Ivan Toney.

Barcelona sporting director Deco is reportedly looking for a striker in the summer market as well. Spanish media have reported that Barcelona are interested in signing Atletico Madrid’s Argentine forward Julián Álvarez.
