Adobe’s new Firefly AI assistant can complete tasks using Creative Cloud apps

Last October, Adobe previewed a new assistant called “Project Moonlight” that lets you perform tasks with a tap in various Adobe apps, including Acrobat, Photoshop, and Express. That product is now available as Firefly AI Assistant.

Firefly AI Assistant will be available in public beta in the coming weeks. The company did not say whether the AI assistant’s pricing would be different from Firefly’s credit-based subscription tier.

Like other creative tools, Firefly AI Assistant allows you to tell it what you want to create and it takes care of the rest. Adobe says the assistant can work with apps like Firefly, Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, Express, and Illustrator to perform tasks on your behalf.

Users can control output from the AI assistant using text prompts, as well as buttons and sliders. The Assistant can suggest actions, coordinate between actions and apps, and run workflows, leaving room for user intervention at any time.

The agent also displays controls based on the project you’re working on. For example, if you’re editing a product photo set in a forest, the Assistant might offer a simple slider to increase or decrease the amount of trees and foliage. Adobe says the assistant will learn more about your creative preferences over time and suggest actions accordingly.

Adobe also releases multi-step skills for assistants. For example, the Social Media Assets skill helps you adapt images to different platforms by cropping or enlarging them, optimizing file size, and saving the output.

Adobe has been steadily working towards launching AI-powered assistants for Photoshop, Express, and Acrobat. The company said Wednesday that it is looking into making these assistants better able to work with large third-party language models.

Competitors like Canva and Figma are also working on agent workflows, but Adobe says its strength lies in its integration with existing popular tools.

“With the Firefly AI assistant and agent experience, we have an opportunity to take the pain out of learning this vast catalog of tools and put all its value at your fingertips, and that’s what we have,” Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s vice president of AI and the Innovation, Creativity, and Productivity business, told TechCrunch.

Adobe is also adding new features to the Firefly tool. The AI video editor now has options to reduce audio noise, adjust reverb and music, has color adjustment tools, and is now integrated with Adobe’s stock library. The company is also adding Kling 3.0 and Kling 3.0 Omni models to Firefly’s library of third-party AI models.
