Chisinau, Moldova (AP) – Moldova’s pro-western governing party wins a clear parliamentary majority, defeating Russian parent group election It was widely seen as a tough choice between the East and West.
As almost all polling station reports were counted, election data showed that the pro-opinion action and solidarity party, or the PA, accounted for 50.1% of the vote, with the patriotic election bloc in Russia at 24.2%. The Russian-friendly alternative block came in third, followed by a party of populists. Party parties in right-wing democracy also won enough votes to enter Congress.
The nervous vote on Sunday was pitted Governance PA Against some Russian-friendly enemies, but there are no viable pro-European partners. Election data shows that the party reveals the majority of around 55 of the 101 seats in Parliament.
Elections were widely regarded as Moldovan’s geopolitical choice. This is during the road to the European Union, or drifting into the fold in Moscow.
Christian Cantil, an associate professor of international relations at the University of Auckland, told The Associated Press that the PAS victory is “a clear victory for Moldova’s pro-European forces and ensures continuity in pursuing the ultimate goal of EU integration in the coming years.”
“The majority of the PAS must form a coalition where the party is unstable and would have slowed the pace of reforms to join the EU,” he said, adding that “Moldova will remain in a difficult geopolitical environment characterized by Russia’s attempts to pull it back to its range of influence.”
Election Day was characterized by a series of incidents, from bomb threats at multiple polling stations overseas to cyberattacks of elections and government infrastructure, filming of voters, and some were illegally transported to polling stations. Three people were also in custody and suspected they planned to cause anxiety after the vote.
