Poland scrambles aircraft as Ukraine is under severe Russian air attack

Kyiv
–

Poland said it scrambled fighter jets in airspace early on Sunday as nearby Ukraine was heavily bombarded by Russian missiles and drones.

At least four people were killed in Kiev during the overnight attack, officials said, and the drone was still shot in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday morning.

Military planes have been activated to ensure military airspace after crossing Polish borders and recent infringement of Russian drone territory.

“The pair of fighter jets on duty are scrambled, and ground air defense and radar reconnaissance systems are kept high vigilance,” the operational order of Polish forces writes to X.

Polish forces said the strikes carried out by Russian “long-range aviation” in Ukraine had prompted the move. “These measures are inherently preventative and aim to ensure airspace and protect citizens, especially in areas adjacent to threatened areas.”

Russian drone and missile attacks sparked alerts across Ukraine through Sunday, Ukraine Air Force data shows.

Photos from CNN producers could be seen as haze of smoke from the explosion remained in the capital on Sunday morning.

Andry Yamak, chief of staff to Ukraine President Voldymir Zelensky, said in telegram mail the residential buildings and infrastructure had been struck. He called the Russian attack “a war against civilians.”

Rescuers are looking at the engines of Russian drones working at the location of Russian drone strikes amidst Russian attacks on Zaporidia, Ukraine on September 27, 2025.

According to Timur Tokachenko, the city’s military regime chief, the 12-year-old girl was among those killed in Kiev.

Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a Telegram post that the fallen debris partially damaged the city’s five-storey building. The homemade home and kindergarten were also damaged, he added.

Dozens of people were injured in air force attacks across Ukraine, mainly in Kiev and Zaporidia.

A recent string of invasions suspected of Russian invasions in European countries’ airspace has shattered nerves on the continent.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that the invasion of Moscow would meet the “decisive response” that he would speak at the UN General Assembly in New York, hours before Russia launched its latest air force attack in Ukraine.

Lavrov said Russia has been accused of planning to attack NATO and the European Union countries, but President Vladimir Putin “has repeatedly crashed these provocations.”

“Russia never had it and has no intention of it,” Lavrov said.
