Messi’s brace helped him move to the top spot on the MLS goalscoring chart with 24 goals in 23 games.
The Argentine star’s first goal came when he reached the exceptional through-ball of the Sergio Basquets in the 74th minute and lacked a recharged mat freeze. His second time came 12 minutes later when he ended up dribbling low in an attack set by Marcelo Weigant’s pass and Suarez’s Decoyran.
Messi was the first provider. Rodriguez finished the attack that drove straight into the middle of New York and placed Miami in front of him in the 43rd minute.
Busquets intercepted half his own pass and fed the ball to Messi soon after. Messi turned his body towards the goal with one touch.
After one touch before, Rodriguez sent for the second time from just inside the penalty area, from Freeze’s past and the correct post.
Playing the MLS Cup playoffs for the second time, Messi played three consecutive matches with at least one goal and one assist, pushing himself against the candidates for the 2025 Most Valuable Player Award.
