Sunday’s clash takes place at the Super Fors Stage, this time it’s higher as the winners take a step closer to the final and the losers move further away from the tournament’s decider.

India starts out as a favorite for several reasons. In particular, Pakistan’s seven wicket thrashings in the Group A match on September 14th.

In addition to his status as the ICC’s top-ranked men’s T20 team, Suryakumar Yadav’s side is the tournament’s defending champion and T20 champion.

For Pakistan, when Indian players leave the field without taking part in the customary post-match handshake, they appear to put aside not only an embarrassing defeat, but also events that arise after their intense losses, so more than one point appears on the line.

Here’s what you need to know about the match:

What happened in the last India vs Pakistan match?

India pushed authority into the match with the first ball as Pakistani opener Saim Ayub Ayub filed a lawsuit against Hardik Pandya bowling and wicketkeeper Mohamad Harris after Indian star bowler Jasprit Bamra attacked.

Shaheen Shah Afridi and leg spin bowler Sufiyan Mukim hit four fours and two sixes, with Pakistan 19th place and past the 100 run mark and finished with 128.

The target was by no means enough for the power-packed Indian batting lineup, so opener Abhishek Sharma snatched the match from Pakistan in a belligerent inning of 31 runs from 13 balls.

Yadav followed the suit with 47 runs from 37 balls as India won the second match of the tournament.

India left with two points and left without shaking hands with the Pakistani team.

What happened after the match?

Yadav left the field with his batting partner, Shivam Duve, without coming close to the Pakistani captain and team due to a traditional post-match handshake.

Pakistani players jumped down in groups and waited for the Indian team and support staff to come out and shake hands.

But the Indian condition was simply to step into the dressing room and shake hands with each other before closing the door as the waiting Pakistani players were watching.

Why didn’t the Indian players shake hands with the Pakistani team?

“Something in life lies in the spirit of a sportsman,” Indian Captain Yadav said when asked to clarify the actions of his team.

“We stand with all the victims and families of the Pahargam terrorist attacks and dedicate this victory to the brave army who took part in Operation Sindoah.”

Yadav had mentioned multiple missile attacks by Indian forces at six locations within Pakistan.

How did Pakistan respond?

Pakistani manager Akram Cheema has filed a protest against the actions of the Indian cricket team with ICC certified match referee Pycroft.

Additionally, Pakistani captain Aga did not speak in a post-match chat with the captain’s host broadcaster, with a sign of protest.

Three days later, Pakistani officials deliberated on leaving the tournament as a sign of protest, delaying the start of the match against the UAE.

Why is India “hosting” the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates?

India is set to host the tournament according to hosting rights schedule, and while the Indian Cricket Management Committee (BCCI) remains the official host of the tournament, it is being held in the UAE due to the recent Indian-Pakistan conflict.

Why doesn’t India play the bilateral cricket series against Pakistan?

The Indian government has banned athletes and teams from competing with Pakistani counterparts in bilateral tournaments in all sports. Indian athletes are also forbidden from travelling to Pakistan and are forced to host all Indian-Pakistani encounters at neutral venues in multinational sports tournaments.

Before ICC Champions Trophy 2025, both countries had agreed to host each other in neutral venues during the ICC event.

The Sunday weather forecast is hot and humid, with a partial cloud cover of 41 degrees Celsius (106 degrees Fahrenheit).

As the match begins immediately after sunset, it cools slightly in the evening and the temperature drops to 31C (88F).

How many times did Pakistan win the Asian Cup?

Pakistan lifted the trophy twice in 2000 and 2012, and qualified for the last five times.

India is a seven-time Asian Cup champion and has made 11 appearances in the finals.

How many times has India beat Pakistan in the Asian Cup?

In 20 clashes at the Asian Cup, India defeated Pakistan 11 times and lost to its neighbors six times. Three matches, including a 2023 group stage match, have been abandoned due to bad weather.

When was Pakistan last defeated India?

Pakistan’s final Asian Cup victory in India took place in the UAE’s 2022 edition. Mohammad Rizwan scored the top score on 71 runs in Super Four Crash, but it was Mohammad Nawaz’s 20-ball 41 that got Pakistan into the run-chase line.

How many times will India play Pakistan in the Asian Cup?

Sunday’s match is so far the only confirmed India vs Pakistan match in the Asian Cup, but on September 21, if you qualify for the second stage, you could meet again in Super Force Crash.

The final on September 28th will offer cricket fans a chance to have a third India vs Pakistan match in two weeks.

Two of Pakistan’s three victories came in Dubai.

Players to watch: India

Abhishek Sharma: The fact that a young top-order batter was able to carve the spot in the highly competitive T20 Indian batting lineup is enough to mark Sharma as something to see in the Asian Cup. The 24-year-old boasts the highest career strike rate of 193 out of all T20 batters, backing it up in the second and half-century formats. Varun Chakaravarthy: The 34-year-old leg spin bowler’s second advance to the Indian side earned him a great reward as he scored 27 wickets in his final 12 T20i matches.

Watching Player: Pakistan

Hasan Nawaz: Pakistan is often criticized for not being able to match modern T20 batting strike rates, but in Nawaz they seem to have found a solution to this problem. The strike rate for 23 years old is 174, with a strike rate for those in their 250s in their 150s in their 16 games. Sufiyan Muqeem: The left-arm wrist spinner has been a mainstay in the limited-edition cricket bowling lineup, winning 25 wickets with 17 T20ISs since his debut two years ago.
