Indonesia, Jakarta (AP) – President of Indonesia Prabowo subianto On Wednesday, he appointed his former rival as new minister of security. His President.

A wealthy former general, Subianto retired General Djamari Chaniago, 77.

Gunawan has since been removed Violent protest The company wiped out Indonesia and killed 10 people in late August.

People’s rage erupted in the world’s third largest democracy after all 580 members of the House of Representatives reported that they received monthly housing allowances of rupiah ($3,075) in addition to their salaries. The allowance was almost 10 times the minimum wage in Jakarta.

The protests spread and became more violent after the driver Awan Kruniawang was attacked by a police vehicle.

Five Ministers Losing their jobsincludes Finance Minister Srimryaniindrawati, a technocrat who served as executive director of the International Monetary Fund and managing director of the World Bank.

Although Subianto did not explain why he would be dismissing the five ministers, analysts and local media speculated that Gunawan’s firing was due to not immediately coordinating with other officials, including military and police, when uncertainty broke out. He was also absent from the meeting. His poor health issues also played a role.

The decision to set up Chaniago as Subianto’s senior security minister indicates the launch of his bid to reintegrate power by replacing the unperforming minister in a key position.

Chaniago was one of seven generals founded in 1998 amid the investigation of activists who were opposed to President Suharto on the last day of his rule, and was founded in 1998.

Subianto was a general at the time. Council investigation found that the merger was guilty of “misinterpreting orders” by his boss.

Copasos, the commander of the Army’s elite army, was disgraced in 1998 after soldiers lured and tortured Suharto’s political enemies. Of the 22 activists who kidnapped that year, 13 remained missing. Some of his men were tried and found guilty, but Subianto was not faced with trial.

He never commented on these accusations, but in 1998 he became a self-imposed exile in Jordan.

Chaniago replaced the then Subiant as commander of the Army Strategic Preparation Command in May 1998 in a very tense political moment after Suharto’s collapse.

“Prabobo needs wide support from senior military personnel and old elites who once stood up to him to realize his big agenda as a new leader in Indonesia,” said Seramat Ginting, a political and military audience at the National University. He added that integrating them is not just a matter of “forgiveness” but a integration strategy to enhance government legitimacy and stability.

“The people who once ‘punished’ him became part of the ‘Prabowo,’ the tale of ‘Accepted by all parties’,” Ginting said.

At a ceremony at the President Merdeka Palace in the capital Jakarta, Svant also vowed to three other ministers. The other three ministers were taken away from the ministers without successors, including Eric Tohill, who had moved from his position as Minister of State Enterprises to the Youth and Sports.

Tohil, a 55-year-old businessman and politician, is considered a close ally of former President Djoko Widodo. Tohil is also the former owner and chairman of Italian football club Inter Milan and US soccer club DC United. He has been president of the Indonesian Football Association since 2023.
