4. Search for Salvatore
After finding a top-notch woman, TVD needed two male components of the essential love triangle. There is no easy task.
“We looked high and low to cast Stephen and Damon,” explained Julie, and Nina said, “I read Chemistry after reading Chemistry with multiple actors.”
Some of the actors read for either (and sometimes both!)? Zach Lorig (plays Matt Donovan), Michael Trevino (who wins the role of Tyler Lockwood), Nathanial Buzolic (later cast as KOL), and seventh heaven star Gallagher, Julie forgot the latter. (She will later cast him as a werewolf after seeing Super 8)
And finally, they found their companions: Paul Wesley and Ian Summerhalder.
“Paul and Ian came late in the process. Paul auditioned like 15 times, and Ian suddenly appeared,” Julie said. On her side, Nina recalls Paul (who first reads for Damon) who stands out from the rest of them reading on the other side of her in chemistry.
