The two singers dated almost a year from the summer of 2006, months after their split from their husband, Nick Lachie. Simpson opened up about his relationship with Mayer in his 2020 memoir, Open Book. She said he told her repeatedly.
Mayer added to Playboy in 2010 that Simpson was like “crack cocaine” to him, “it was “sexually crazy. That’s all I say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm.”
This didn’t sit well with his ex. “He thought it was that I wanted to be called,” Simpson wrote in her memoirs. “It was embarrassing to see that the floor was hanging out because my grandmother was actually going to read it.”
Two years later, Mayer expressed regret over his comments, telling NPR, “I had nothing to say. I really didn’t want to share what was going on in life, but I didn’t want to get bored.”
Simpson also wrote that she was always worried that she “not smart enough” for Mayer, “my anxiety will skyrocket and I’ll pour another drink.”
On April 1, 2020, Mayer watched what happens live with Andy Cohen and said about Simpson’s memoir “hears some bits” and said, “But as Pee Wee Herman says in Pee Wee’s Big Adventures before the film of his life, the movie of his life is over, he hasn’t seen the film. And I think it’s foresight here.”
