Norris was second in second, nearly 20 seconds behind Verstappen, cutting the gap to 31 points in the title race. He started 34 points late for the Australian driver.
The switch came after Norris had a slow pit stop. This seemed to put more chances for the title when he came out behind his teammates. However, McLaren ordered Piastri to pass the past with the British drivers.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton gave solid performances in their team’s home race. Supporting passionate, red-covered Tifosi fans, Leclair came in fourth, and Hamilton started in 10th, following a grid penalty in fifth place before surgeting the field over the line in sixth place.
Norris was eager to rebound from the miserable Dutch Grand Prix. He retired due to a rare engine problem. From the second in Monza, he was comparable to Verstappen from the beginning, pushed into the grass at the first horn.
“I always know that it’s going to be a good fight with Max, and that was it,” Norris said. “We were one of those slightly late weekends, but it was a good fight and I enjoyed it.”
Verstappen was told to return the place and officially did so, but the Red Bull driver regained the lead at the start of the fourth lap and dived past Norris into turn 1.
From there, it was mostly a victory procession for Verstappen. He found himself briefly behind McLarens after piting on lap 38, but Piastri was brought in on lap 46, then took the lead when Norris laps.
