Top seed Giannik Sinner cruised in the semi-finals, losing only seven games to Italian compatriot Lorenzo Musetti.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner continued his ruthless run at the US Open, beating the 10th seed Lorenzomsetti 6-1 6-4 6-2 on Wednesday in the first all-Italian men’s grand slam quarterfinals.

The world number one, who also holds Australia’s open trophy, will expand his winning streak on the hard court to 26 matches, facing Canada’s 25th seed Felix Auger Ariasime in the semi-finals on Friday.

“It was a good performance, I was very solid, I started off well…it’s almost midnight so thank you for staying,” Thinner told the crowd.

“Obviously we know each other well,” he said of Musetti.

“We came from the same country. There are so many Italians in the draw. There are so many Italians here, so it’s nice to play here. You play the Davis Cup and stuff, but you have to steal your friendship for the sake of the match.

“It’s amazing. I’m sure the Italians are not sleeping home. It’s a special country and there’s incredible support.”

A hard blow from The Word Go helped him take a 5-0 lead. And the loudest applause of the evening came when Musetti got on the board, but that was the only joy he had on the opening set.

Musetti temporarily threatened to break early in the second time, but Sinner stopped his challenge of double his advantage before easing down the next set and finishing with a clean hold.

“All players in the semi-finals of the Grand Slam are playing amazing tennis,” added Thinner.

“This is a very special tournament. It’s the last Grand Slam of the year. There’s no good place to play a night game at the biggest stadium we have.

“That means a lot to me.”
