What are the benefits of kojic acid?
Kojic acid is most useful for evening out skin tone. Heredia recommends it to treat inflammatory hyperpigmentation that remains after acne, ingrown hairs, sunspots, and certain types of melasma.
“What I always want to be clear about is that kojic acid does not ‘bleach’ the skin,” says Heredia. “Instead, it helps control excessive pigment production. It gradually fades existing discoloration while preventing new stains from forming.”
How do I use kojic acid?
Kojic acid is a versatile ingredient that can be used on both the face and body. It is especially effective on affected areas such as the neck, chest, and armpits.
However, people with very sensitive skin, active eczema, or compromised skin barrier function should use caution as this ingredient can cause further redness and irritation.
Additionally, Heredia emphasizes that SPF is important when using products containing kojic acid. If you don’t apply sunscreen, “it’s like trying to empty a bathtub while leaving the faucet on,” Heredia says.
She also advises against over-applying active ingredients like retinol and other active ingredients. “Doing too much can damage the skin barrier and actually worsen inflammation, which can ultimately lead to more pigmentation, especially if you have darker skin tones.”
