Hello, my name is Hui Jie from Singapore. Welcome to another edition of CNBC’s Daily Open.

The World Cup final was a big event. Here in Singapore, many people watched from early morning as Spain overwhelmed Argentina and broke the deadlock in extra time.

In the Middle East, the United States continues to attack targets in Iran, causing oil prices to soar. But the cost appears to be mounting for Washington, with three U.S. military personnel killed in the past few days.

What you need to know today

Spain defeated Argentina to win the Soccer World Cup. La Roja defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 10-a-side tournament to win their first World Cup since 2010.

As regulation time ended with neither team scoring, Argentina national team midfielder Enzo Fernandes was sent off in the 93rd minute.

Later, Spaniard Ferran Torres found the back of the net deep in extra time, clinching victory for the European team.

Along with the coveted trophy, Spain will take home $51 million in prize money, while second-place Argentina will take home $34 million.

Middle East tensions

From World Cup fever to more pressing matters: The United States continues to attack Iran for the ninth night in a row, raising concerns about a protracted conflict in the Middle East, US Central Command announced.

Iranian airstrikes have claimed the lives of three U.S. service members in recent days, bringing the death toll to 17.

U.S. Central Command announced Sunday that the U.S. military “found an unidentified body at the scene of a July 17 airstrike in Jordan” that killed two service members and is working to identify it.

On Saturday, a third military member died in Iraq “during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance by a downed Iranian one-way strike drone.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said his country had “unforgettable lessons ahead” for the United States, and his country’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Ghalibabadi said Iran had suspended its commitments to a memorandum of understanding signed with the United States last month.

Crude oil prices soar

This development has increased oil prices in line with international indicators. brent Prices exceeded $90 per barrel for the first time since June 11. west texas intermediate Futures prices also rose to the highest in about a month, trading at $84.68 per barrel.

All of this points to growing uncertainty in the crucial Strait of Hormuz. Dimitris Maniatis, CEO of maritime risk services firm Malirisks, told CNBC that the security situation in the strait has returned to a “worst-case scenario” for oil tankers after Iran repeatedly attacked ships last week.

new prime minister of uk

Andy Burnham, leader of the British Labor Party, will take over from Keir Starmer, becoming the seventh British prime minister in the last decade.

Mr Starmer resigned from his post in June following Labor’s crushing defeat in local elections in May, and amid growing opposition from his own MPs over his leadership and policy agenda.
