According to his wife Michel, four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome suffered a life-threatening injury to his heart in a training crash in the southern France last week.
Briton, 40, was airlifted to a hospital in Toulon after the crash on August 27th. It also left a broken rib bone, a collapsed lung, and a fracture of the back.
His wife said the doctors discovered Froome suffering from rupture of the pericardium – tears in the protective sac surrounding the heart are often caused by blunt chest trauma.
“It was obviously much more serious than the broken bones,” she told the Times newspaper. “He’s fine, but it’s going to be a long recovery process. He won’t ride a bike for a while.”
Froome, who won seven Grand Tours, including two Espana titles and one Giro D’Italia victory, struggled to regain his best form after a fast crash during training for Criterium du Dauphine in 2019.
Last year, he expressed his desire to compete in the Tour de France last year before resigning, but faced further setbacks. He suffered from a broken collarbone when he crashed at the final stage of his UAE tour earlier this year and was not selected for Tour de France of the year.
After the surgery, in a post on Froome’s Instagram account, the cyclist said he was “well and grateful for the excellent medical support he received.”
