Are toe spacers effective for bunions?

“Separators really relieve symptoms,” says Dr. Laurino. Stretching the hard tissue along the big toe joint relieves pain and pressure, reducing pain.

“What they can’t do is put the bunion itself back in place. A bunion is a structural change in the bones and joints, and there’s no silicone device to put the bones back in place,” he explains.

Besides bunions, toe separators can also “help with early hammer toes that are still flexible, pressure between the toes caused by neuromas, and simply feet that have spent 40 years in narrow shoes.”

So, are toe spacers a scam? Not necessarily.

“It works for its intended purpose: as a stretching and comfort tool,” explains Dr. Laurino. “When used regularly, many people find real relief from congestion, pain, and tightness. And there’s a good reason to use it to prevent flexible deformities from becoming stiff.”

However, if you are expecting a toe separator; Even if you want to improve your bunion or completely straighten your toe, you’ll likely be disappointed when you don’t see results.

Quite aptly, Dr. Laurino says: “Buy for relief, not correction.”
