Child rape and murder in India, leading to killings by mobs and police

The shocking rape and murder of a young girl in eastern India has sparked widespread anxiety, led to the mass murder of an innocent man and police killed the main suspect in custody.

The series of tragic events reveals that the country has a problem not only with sexual violence, but also with attempts to bring perpetrators to justice.

The body of a child was pulled from a pond in the city of Baruipur in West Bengal state on Sunday, local media reported. She is believed to be 11 or 12 years old, according to reports.

According to reports, her family had reported her missing the previous day. Indian media widely reported that she had been raped, citing authorities.

Video footage of the recovery of the body was widely circulated on social media, sparking widespread anger and political blame in the vast state.

In the aftermath, angry mobs took to the streets and destroyed stores and railway lines. According to authorities, a man believed to be the perpetrator was bludgeoned to death by the crowd.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later told reporters the man was innocent.

“He too will receive justice,” he said. “Approximately 200 people responsible for damaging police vehicles and destroying railway lines have been identified.”

CNN contacted Baruipur police, but the official who answered the phone said he had no knowledge of the case. CNN also contacted the inspector general of the Presidential Range, a senior West Bengal police official who oversees the area where the crime occurred, but did not receive a response.

Trinamool Youth Congress supporters participate in a protest against the rape and murder of a girl in Baruipur, Kolkata, India, on July 8, 2026.

Adhikari told reporters that “the government and police are doing everything in their power” to bring justice to the girl’s family.

Several people have been arrested in connection with the girl’s death, authorities said.

Early Wednesday morning, the main suspect arrested in a rape-murder case was killed in a gunfight while in police custody, state broadcaster News on Air reported.

News on Air reported that while the crime scene was being reconstructed as part of the investigation, the man allegedly grabbed a police officer’s service firearm, fired one shot and attempted to flee the scene. State television said a gunfight ensued and the suspect was seriously injured and was later pronounced dead.

India has long struggled to combat high rates of violence against women, and numerous rape cases have attracted global attention.

In December 2012, the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student shocked the nation, sending thousands to the streets demanding both justice and change.

Justice for Nirbhaya, as she became known, was finally served as all five people responsible for her death were found guilty. In response, India strengthened its sexual assault laws. The definition of rape has been expanded to include all forms of penetration, and harsher penalties have been introduced for crimes such as sexual assault, voyeurism and stalking.

Despite these changes, rape remains endemic in the country, and survivors and advocates say the government continues to not do enough to protect women or punish their attackers.

A total of 29,536 rape cases were recorded in India in 2024, according to the government’s latest crime statistics, but activists say assaults are widely underreported.

Activists have long argued that the problem lies in deeper structural issues that are difficult to dismantle.

Indian society can be deeply patriarchal. Despite being illegal, dowries are still commonly demanded and accepted. In some families, a strong preference for boys leads to abortion or abandonment of girls.

According to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Gender Gap Report, India ranks 131st out of 148 countries in terms of opportunities available to women.

Deaths of high-profile suspects by Indian police, especially in remote and rural areas, are common, and public anger over the lack of an effective and transparent justice system has sparked a new cycle.

The latest incident in Baruipur comes nearly two years after the rape and murder of a medical intern in West Bengal’s capital Kolkata, which also sparked widespread protests and outrage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationally powerful Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently took control of West Bengal’s local government in state elections in May, ending 15 years of rule by the All India Trinamool Congress.

The recent murder of the girl has sparked a bitter political spat between the two parties, with the Trinamool Congress accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of not doing enough to protect women and girls in the state. The BJP state government in West Bengal denies the charges.
