Meta joins the crowded AI coding battle with Muse Spark 1.1

Meta released a new version of Muse Spark to the public on Thursday. It is a multimodal AI model designed for agentic coding that aims to compete with similar products from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Spark 1.1, first released in April, can perform multi-step inference to handle complex processes, manage digital workflows, and introduce new capabilities to enterprise systems, the company said.

Meta is a little behind its competitors here. Anthropic and OpenAI have offered similar models for quite some time. But that doesn’t mean Meta’s entry into the market isn’t a threat.

Cost of use remains a source of continued competitiveness in the AI industry, and Meta appears to offer competitive pricing. The company will charge $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens, Reuters reports. It performs on par (albeit slightly better) with Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 4.5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna.

Meta’s pitch to users is that Spark can handle large-scale agent workloads, fix bugs, and assist with large-scale code migrations. This is a type of automation that companies are increasingly relying on AI companies to provide.

“Muse Spark 1.1 delivers superior performance for personal agent tasks that require planning and orchestration across a variety of external apps and services,” the company said in a blog post.

Meta has released several foundational AI models over the past few years. The release of Muse Spark was apparently important enough to force CEO Mark Zuckerberg to post on X for the first time in three years. Zuckerberg’s last post was in July 2023, around the time the platform was rebranded from Twitter to X.

In his post, Zuckerberg called Spark “a very low-cost, powerful agent and coding model,” noting that the model is “the most powerful in agent performance, tool usage, and computer usage.”

Zuckerberg also hinted that the company plans to release additional models, saying, “More models coming soon.”

This week has been a big week for AI announcements. For Meta in particular, Tuesday also announced a new AI image generation model called Muse Image. Other releases this week include a new version of SpaceXAI’s Grok and OpenAI’s new model family GPT-5.6, also released on Thursday. Suffice it to say that competition within the AI industry is as healthy as ever, and there is a perfect job for companies looking to stand out from their competitors.
