England defender Jharrel Quansah has been suspended for two games after receiving a red card in England’s World Cup last-16 win over Mexico, leaving manager Thomas Tuchel short on back-line options in the final stages of the tournament.
The two-match suspension, confirmed on Thursday, means Quansah will also miss Saturday’s quarter-final match between England and Norway in Miami and, if they advance, the semi-final.
Quansah was sent off after a video review for a sliding stud-up tackle in his match against his co-host in the round of 16.
Jude Bellingham’s goal and Harry Kane’s penalty double handed them a rare defeat to Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, with England 10-a-side winning 3-2 in a tense World Cup classic to advance to the quarter-finals.
England are considering a possible appeal after FIFA overturned the one-match ban imposed on American striker Folarin Balogun earlier in the tournament.
The defender will only be selected again if England reach the World Cup finals.
The suspension is a setback for Tuchel as England look to continue their rise in the tournament, with injuries compounding the team’s defensive problems.
England midfielder Jordan Henderson has had surgery on his left wrist after tripping over an advertising board during his team’s victory celebrations against Mexico. He rejoined the team at camp in Kansas City, but was ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup.
Earlier in the day, France coach Didier Deschamps revealed that FIFA had rejected his appeal against Michael Oliseh’s yellow card in the World Cup round-of-16 match against Paraguay.
“The yellow card has not changed. We were notified by FIFA this morning. It has been upheld,” Deschamps told reporters in Foxborough on Wednesday, on the eve of the quarterfinal match between France and Morocco at Boston Stadium.
