Two of the world’s most exciting forwards, Vinicius Jr. and Erling Haaland, will shine in New Jersey on Sunday night in a tight Round of 16 clash between Brazil and Norway.
Despite Brazil’s dominance on the world stage, it has historically struggled to find a way to break through to Norway. After four failed attempts, the Selecao are hoping the fifth time will be the charm.
Carlo Ancelotti’s talented side have their fair share of flaws, and after narrowly avoiding elimination in the last 32 against Japan, they will need to improve their performance against Norway, one of the tournament’s dark horses.
Norway, spearheaded by Haaland and Martin Odegaard, arrived with bragging rights. Brazil is one of only three countries it has faced in the World Cup without recording at least one win.
How did Brazil and Norway reach the last 16?
Brazil finished first in Group C with wins over Scotland and Haiti and a draw with Morocco. In the final 32 games, they fought back from a one-goal deficit and defeated Japan 2-1 in added time.
Norway finished second in Group I with wins over Iraq and Senegal and a loss to France. They defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in the second half in the last 32. It was the Scandinavian nation’s first World Cup finals victory since losing to Italy in 1938 and 1998.
Will Haaland be able to extend his Norwegian dream further?
The influence of towering forward Haaland, both for club and country, cannot be underestimated.
Haaland accounted for half of Norway’s 10 goals in the tournament, an impressive number for a 25-year-old making his World Cup debut.
On Sunday, the 1.95-meter (6.4-foot) ponytailed talisman will need to strike again if Norway is to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.

Norway could take inspiration from the 1998 World Cup team that famously defeated Brazil 2-1 in their group match. And they don’t need to ask their coach Starre Solbakken (Norwegian midfielder) for advice.
“Brazil are the favorites, of course they are, but we expect them to play. We’re not playing for fun. We’re playing to win the game and get to the quarter-finals,” Solbakken said. “It’s possible, but it’s very difficult.”
The Norwegians will be wary of Vinicius, Brazil’s trump card. Vinicius was the team’s top scorer in the tournament with four goals, making him the most influential player. Vinicius became the first Brazilian to score in all three group stage matches at a World Cup since Ronaldo and Rivaldo in 2002. This was the last time Brazil lifted the trophy.

Brazil vs Norway: Head to head
Norway has a rare record, having never lost to Brazil, with two wins and two draws in their last four meetings, including a memorable 2-1 victory over Brazil in the group stage of the 1998 World Cup.
The last time Brazil and Norway met in a friendly was in 2006, when the match ended 1-1.
More worrying for Ancelotti is that Brazil have lost the last six World Cup finals against European opponents since beating Germany in the 2002 final.
