What is the FIFA Golden Boot Award and how is it determined?

The FIFA Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals at the end of the tournament.

France’s Mbappé is the current holder after scoring eight goals in the 2022 World Cup against Qatar.

If two players are tied for the same number of goals at the end of the tournament, the player with the most assists wins the award.

If these tiebreakers cannot separate two players, the Golden Boot will go to the player with the fewest minutes of goals and assists.

Mbappe, Harry Kane and James Rodriguez are all aiming to become top scorers for a second time.

England’s Kane won the award at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and Colombia’s Rodríguez was the top scorer at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

No player has ever won this award more than once.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo win the Golden Boot this year?

He can do it, but he needs to start scoring more goals sooner.

The Portuguese veteran has scored two goals in this tournament, both of which came in a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan in the group stage.

Portugal are aiming for a higher place in the tournament and will be looking to their captain to increase his goal tally.

French forward Juste Fontaine holds the record for scoring an astonishing 13 goals in the 1958 tournament in Sweden.

Sandor Kocsis scored 11 goals in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, and West Germany’s Gerd Müller scored 10 goals in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.
