Following the weekend’s hostilities in the Middle East, President Donald Trump said via social media on Monday that the United States and Iran are ready to hold new talks in the Qatari capital on Tuesday.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump said, “Iran has requested a meeting. It will be held tomorrow in Doha!”

There was no immediate reaction from Iran. CNBC has contacted Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is awaiting a response.

A White House official told CNBC that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and peace envoy Steve Witkoff are scheduled to brief Congress on the initial peace agreement on Monday. The press conference was first reported by Punchbowl News.

The White House did not provide details about a potential peace agreement.

Trump’s post came after the United States and Iran exchanged a series of attacks over the weekend that threatened to derail negotiations to end the conflict.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt told Fox News on Monday that special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel for the talks.

“As far as we are concerned, we are upholding the end of the ceasefire. We will meet violence with violence,” she added.

“The United States has the best and most powerful military in the world. The president retains the right to use it. But again, the memorandum of understanding will continue to be discussed. The ceasefire is in place and we hope to reach a good agreement.”

US and Iran agree to 'withdraw' after weekend military attacks

The United States struck Iranian military targets over the weekend in response to Tehran’s recent attacks on ships in the strategically important waterway.

In response to the Iranian attack, President Trump on Sunday once again threatened to annihilate Iran.

“The day may come when we will no longer be able to maintain reason and be forced to carry out militarily the work we have successfully begun. Then the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!” he wrote in Truth Social.

U.S. officials said both sides would suspend fighting and allow commercial ships to pass through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

A U.S. official told CNBC on Sunday that “technical discussions will continue on all areas under the memorandum of understanding.” “For the time being, both sides have stopped and ships can sail freely.”

The Strait of Hormuz, located in the Gulf between Oman and Iran, is recognized as one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. This narrow waterway typically handles about 20% of the world’s oil shipments.

In another post on Truth Social earlier Monday, President Trump welcomed the recent decline in oil and gas prices, noting that U.S. crude oil prices have fallen to levels before the start of the Iran war on February 28.
