Waymo robotaxis are Uber The companies confirmed Monday that they have deployed the app in Phoenix, Arizona.

“Phoenix was our first test market with Waymo and was a planned, limited rollout, with just over a dozen vehicles dedicated to the program,” Uber said in a statement. “We learned a lot from that collaboration and it helped us quickly expand in Austin and Atlanta, where hundreds of Waymo AVs are available exclusively on Uber and our coverage area continues to expand.”

The end of the robotaxi pilot program calls into question Uber’s dominance in the future of self-driving services.

Uber executives are touting the company as an important platform that robotaxi operators need to rely on to develop demand. The ride-hailing giant has partnerships with all major self-driving car developers except: tesla.

Tesla’s fledgling robotaxi service currently operates in Texas with a very limited fleet of just 69 registered self-driving cars.

Waymo said in a statement that Uber’s efforts were “a productive experiment that paves the way for future expansion and partnerships around the world.”

Waymo, which operates about 4,000 self-driving cars in the United States, today made its self-driving cars available exclusively via Uber in Austin and Atlanta. In nine other cities, Waymo’s robotaxi rides are available primarily through its own app, but on a limited basis through public transit partnerships.

Waymo plans to offer robotaxi rides lift It will be held in Nashville later this year without an exclusive.

Autmny AI founder and self-driving vehicle industry researcher Grayson Brulte drew attention to the end of the companies’ collaboration in Phoenix in a social media post on Monday. The pilot program ended about a month ago.

Uber said it plans to partner with another AV company in Phoenix, but declined to say which company.

Last fall, Tesla received a permit to operate a ride-hailing service in Arizona, a step toward its promise to build a large-scale robotaxi service in the United States. The company also received permission to test self-driving cars with human safety drivers in Arizona.

Zoox, owned by Amazon, announced in March that it would test its driverless ride-hailing service in hopes of expanding it to Phoenix this year.

During the company’s first-quarter earnings call, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi touted Uber’s partnerships in the self-driving vehicle space. RivianZoox, China’s Pony.AI, and Croatia’s Verne.

“AV mobility trips with Uber have increased more than 10x year-over-year, and we currently operate in eight cities, with plans to expand to up to 15 cities by the end of the year,” he said.

Waymo is the clear leader in the US and is looking to expand internationally this year.

The company has announced two voluntary software recalls since last month, including one to fix an issue that allowed Waymo robotaxis to enter construction zones on freeways in Phoenix.
