One of the biggest group games of the 2026 World Cup will be held in Miami on Saturday, with Colombia taking on Portugal in a battle for the top two spots in Group K.
Colombia, featuring Luis Diaz and Daniel Muñoz, have already qualified for the round of 32 as the current top-ranked team, while second-placed Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, are also guaranteed to advance to the knockout stages.
Those rankings could change after Saturday’s game at Hard Rock Stadium, where tickets were reportedly sold for thousands of dollars and a sellout crowd is expected.
Al Jazeera tells you everything you need to know about Colombia vs Portugal.
Portugal national team expects an “away” atmosphere in Miami
Portugal are hugely popular around the world, led by superstar Ronaldo’s extraordinary presence, but Colombia will hold the advantage of the Hard Rock Stadium crowd in this match.
Hundreds of thousands of Colombian-Americans live in the Miami metropolitan area, and the Colombian team has a partisan following. Ahead of the game, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez acknowledged that both teams had had a very exciting final match, but said his team would play “away”.
Colombia vs. Portugal was the most sought-after game of all 72 group stage matches, with 5 million ticket requests received in the first 24 hours for December’s random draw, according to a reporter for The Athletic.
Asked about the dedication of the fans, Martinez quipped, “I mean, I had to buy tickets for my family in November.” “I mean, we knew it would be difficult to get tickets.”
“I think it’s fascinating. The passion of the game at a difficult time in the world. Football still brings unity, it still brings passion, it brings inspiration to children… So I hope football wins and it inspires everyone who watches the game.”
Colombia advanced to the final tournament with six points from two games, while Portugal are in second place with four points and are almost through. If they finish second, they could face either England or Croatia in the final tournament, which could mean they have a tougher road ahead.

Colombian coach warns team against Ronaldo and Vicinha
Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo said his team will need “special tactical discipline” against Portugal, whom he considers one of the favorites. The Colombians will need to avoid defeat if they are to advance as group winners, but Lorenzo was not taking anything for granted against a team ranked fifth in the FIFA world rankings.
“We try to maintain our style and football identity,” he said.
“But definitely we have to pay attention to other characteristics and strengths that (Portugal) have. Portugal is a very well-coached team. They have coaches and players who are at the elite level of world football… and it shows in their game.”
Lorenzo also said Colombia would be wary of the threat posed by Ronaldo, who scored twice in the last game, and Vicinha, a defensive midfielder known for his ball control, work rate and playmaking ability.
“Both Vicinha and Ronaldo are decisive players. One is their ability to structure the game and the quality of their playmaking, and the other is their finishing ability,” he added. “So we definitely can’t leave them alone or ignore them. Hopefully, the whole team will be well-oiled.”
Colombia is scheduled to play in the World Cup finals tournament for the first time since 2018, although they missed out on qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
