President Donald Trump on Monday called on drug companies to “justify the success” of their COVID drugs days after the Food and Drug Administration put in new restrictions on those who can receive vaccines for the virus.
“It is very important for pharmaceutical companies to justify the success of various COVID drugs. Many people think they are a miracle that saves millions of lives. Others disagree!” Trump wrote in the Truth Social Post.
The FDA on Wednesday approved the latest round of the latest Covid vaccine, but only those at high risk of severe illness.
The president’s comments come days after he fired the centre of Disease Control and Prevention Director Susan Monares after refusing to resign. Four other health officials at the CDC announced last week that they would be leaving the agency, including Demetre Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Vaccination and Respiratory Diseases.
“I want the answer because the CDC is torn apart with this question, but I want it now,” Trump said in a post.
“I was shown the information Pfizerand others, it’s extraordinary, but they don’t seem to show those results to the public. Why? “The president wrote.
Pfizer did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
The drastic change in leadership at the CDC follows a series of measures by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which overhauls federal health agencies and changes U.S. vaccination policies. He launched a massive fire, destroyed major government vaccine panels and canceled research on mRNA shot technology.
Trump urged drug companies to be more transparent about the outcome, writing that “everyone, including Bobby Kennedy Jr. and the CDC, will tear themselves apart and grasp the success or failure of the pharmaceutical community,” urging drug companies to be transparent about the outcome.
Trump in the Post also continued to promote Warp Speed. His first administration’s pandemic vaccine efforts began in May 2020, accelerating the development, production and distribution of covid vaccines and therapeutics.
However, Kennedy – a prominent vaccine skeptic – has downplayed the effectiveness of vaccinations.
In a guest essay published Monday in The New York Times, a group of nine former directors and representative directors from the CDC said Kennedy was “at risk” the health of Americans.
“(Kennedy) has been to the CDC and our country’s public health system over the past few months — a decision to fire Dr. Susan Monares a few days ago — is different from what we’ve experienced before,” the group wrote.
“We are concerned about the broad impact that all these decisions have on American health security,” they said.
