British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign on Monday and set a date for his departure, Britain’s Observer newspaper reported, but government sources said Starmer remained focused on continuing the job of governing.
Threats to Mr Starmer’s position, which he has spent months building, rose sharply on Friday when rival Andy Burnham won a seat in parliament, allowing him to mount a formal leadership challenge.
The Observer reports that Mr Starmer is discussing the issue with his wife at their Checkers holiday home before making a final decision, but Labor leaders expect a clear statement on his future to be made as early as Monday.
But government officials said Mr Starmer remained focused on his job and pointed to past comments to that effect.
Britain’s leader said on Friday he would fight any challenge to his position and urged Labor not to divide itself with infighting.
More than 100 of the party’s elected MPs – around a quarter of Labor members in the House of Commons – have publicly said they want Mr Starmer to resign or are planning a timetable for his resignation.
