Brazil’s opening game draw with Morocco left fans with more doubts than convictions, with millions wondering whether the record five-time champions were still among the best in the world.

Brazil fell to third place in a group that was expected to be overwhelming, and now they have to face weaker Haiti in the second group game, forcing a World Cup reset.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti will need to address some of his team’s shortcomings if he wants to avoid another disappointing showing in the group stages.

Here’s what you need to know before Brazil vs. Haiti starts.

No need to panic yet, Brazil suggests

Brazil’s poor performance in the first game has raised doubts about the team’s chances of progressing into the top half, but Ancelotti believes there is no need to worry just yet.

Against Morocco, Brazil showed signs of nervousness early on and struggled to deal with the AFCON champions’ attack. Some players struggled to cope with the intensity of the competition.

The Italian coach, who has been in charge for just over a year, said the next game against Haiti would be an opportunity to address his team’s weaknesses.

“You can’t win the World Cup in the first game,” Ancelotti told reporters in Philadelphia on Thursday.

“The self-criticism of the players was very positive. I think we can solve the problems. I remain confident that we will be competitive.”

Critics claim Brazil lack an identity under Ancelotti, but the 67-year-old, nicknamed ‘Don Carlo’, believes it is more important to adapt tactics depending on the match situation.

“I don’t want a single identity,” he said. “We want our team to have multiple identities.”

Haiti wants its people to be proud

It took more than half a century for Haiti to return to the World Cup. The Caribbean underdogs face a bit of a brutal challenge as they are grouped with world-class Brazil, African giants Morocco and Scotland.

Although their 1-0 loss to Scotland in their first match did not dampen their spirits, Haiti knows they face an even tougher task against Brazil, who have no shortage of talent in their squad.

A matchup with Haiti is highly likely, but fans are daring to dream in a tournament where upsets are not uncommon.

“Tomorrow (Friday) we have everything to gain from a game like this. It’s been 52 years since we last played in the World Cup and now we’re playing against Brazil. We have to live up to the expectations of our fans,” said coach Sébastien Migne.

“It’s an honor to be hereand we hope to make the Haitian people proud of us.

“If we win this game, Haiti will go absolutely crazy,” he added.

Haiti, ranked 85th in the world, is aiming for its first World Cup goal, but enters the match 80th below Brazil in the FIFA rankings.

Overall, Brazil are seventh on the favorites list with a probability of 5.2%, behind a number of teams such as France, Argentina and England, which make up the top three teams.

Brazil: DWWWL

Haiti: LLWDL

Brazil has performed significantly better than Haiti in the last five games.

They started their North American campaign with a 1-1 draw against Morocco. Before the World Cup, Brazil recorded wins over Egypt and Panama in friendly matches, and defeated Croatia in March. However, they lost to France in March.

Haiti lost to Scotland in their first World Cup match. They lost to Peru and won against New Zealand in a pre-World Cup friendly earlier this month, but drew with Iceland and lost to Tunisia in a friendly in March.

Brazil vs Haiti: Head-to-head

Brazil has played against Haiti three times and won each time. The last meeting between the two sides dates back to the 2016 Copa America group match, when Brazil defeated Haiti 7-1.

Friday’s matchup between Brazil and Haiti will be the first meeting of the World Cup.

Brazil vs Haiti: Team News

Just like in the opening game, Brazil’s star Neymar Jr., who has been suffering from many injuries, was absent from the match against Haiti.

The veteran forward, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, will be sidelined due to a lingering calf strain and will hope to recover in time for the final group game against Scotland on June 24. He has not played for Brazil since October 2023.

Neymar was diagnosed with the injury in late May and has only played half of his club Santos’ games this year due to various fitness issues.

For Haiti, striker Nazon, who was on the bench last time, is questionable.

Ancelotti is expected to make changes following criticism for starting striker Igor Thiago and right-back Roger Ibanez against Morocco. Danilo and Cunha are widely expected to replace them in the lineup against Haiti.
