O.J. Simpson met Nicole Brown in 1977 and divorced his first wife Margaret in 1979. He married Nicole on February 2, 1985. Daughter Sydney was born eight months later, and son Justin was born in 1988.
“You guys aren’t doing anything,” Nicole told police when she arrived at Simpson’s home at 360 Rockingham Avenue in L.A.’s upscale Brentwood neighborhood in the early morning hours of January 1, 1989, in response to a domestic violence call, according to news reports that night. “You don’t do anything. You come out. You’ve been here eight times. And you don’t do anything to him.”
Mr Simpson claimed he did not hit Nicole, but only pushed her off the bed. He was then told he needed to go to the police station with an officer, and instead drove away. A few days later, Nicole went to the police station and said she did not want to press charges, but agreed to out-of-court mediation.
On May 24, 1989, Simpson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and was sentenced to 24 months’ probation, ordered to perform 120 hours of community service and pay a total fine of $470, and to attend counseling twice a week (although he was allowed to attend by telephone).
Nicole eventually moved in with Justin and Sydney and filed for divorce in February 1992. In a settlement in October of that year, OJ agreed to pay Nicole a lump sum of $433,750 and $10,000 a month in child support, and Nicole retained ownership of the rental property. She eventually purchased a condo at 875 S. Bundy Drive in Brentwood and moved there in January 1994.
All the while, Simpson repeatedly threatened her and tried to get her back together. Prosecutors and witnesses said OJ stood outside and peered through the window on numerous occasions, including when she was having sex with her boyfriend. According to Jeffrey Toobin’s 1996 book The Run of His Life, Nicole detailed recent threats from Simpson in a June 3, 1994 diary entry.
On June 7, 1994, she called a run-down women’s shelter in Santa Monica complaining that her ex-boyfriend was stalking her. Five days later she died.
