Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump on Sunday, the Kremlin said, during which they wished the president a happy 80th birthday and discussed bilateral relations between Moscow and Washington.
During the meeting, which lasted less than an hour, Trump again called for an end to the war in Ukraine, according to Kremlin aide Ily Ushakov.
The two countries also agreed that U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will visit Russia again in the near future, Ushakov said. Putin has told Trump that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should come to Moscow if he wants to meet, but Zelensky has consistently rejected this offer.
According to a Kremlin handout, Trump told Putin that a war deal between the United States and Iran was imminent and could be announced later Sunday.
CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.
Ukraine’s president announced on Sunday that Trump also met with Zelensky and wished the U.S. president a happy birthday. “We have had quite detailed discussions on a number of important issues, certainly including peace,” Zelenskiy said.
“We have agreed to hold further discussions at the G7 summit meeting,” he added, referring to the annual meeting of the leaders of the Group of Seven major countries to be held in France this week.
