If its founders and other business leaders weren’t already envious of Dario Amodei, one of the world’s fastest-growing AI companies, they will now seriously become jealous of the company, now valued at around $1 trillion by private market investors, just over five years after it was founded.
In a new conversation with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, he revealed that he only has one direct report. It’s his chief of staff. The other members of Anthropic’s executive team will report to his sister, co-founder and president Daniela Amodei, who is responsible for day-to-day operations.
Anyone who has ever managed a large team knows that the human side of the job has a way of consuming everything else. Amodei’s arrangement allowed him to concentrate almost entirely on a comprehensive essay (complete with footnotes) on strategy, culture, research directions, and the future of civilization. “It’s incredibly freeing,” he tells Chan.
This is a very rare structure. OpenAI’s Sam Altman reportedly has about six direct reports, which is much more standard, while Nvidia’s Jensen Huang (another extreme outlier) has a few dozen.
