Nahid Rana’s five-wicket haul in the second innings gave Bangladesh their first home Test win against Pakistan in Dhaka.

Pace bowler Nahid Rana took five wickets as Bangladesh defeated Pakistan by 104 runs in the rain-hit first Test after a thrilling fifth-day batting collapse.

Pakistan, who were chasing 268 points for victory in Dhaka, were 119-3, but in Tuesday’s final session, debutant Abdullah Fazal bravely scored 66 points and they fell to 163 points all out.

Bangladesh hold a 1-0 lead in the two-game home series.

The Test victory was Bangladesh’s first at home against Pakistan and third overall.

The 23-year-old Fazal scored 51 points and Salman Agha scored 26 points, raising Pakistan’s hopes of victory, before Rana rocked the opposition with a career-best record of 5 wins and 40 losses.

The 23-year-old Rana made an impact with his pace and reverse swing, taking four wickets for just 10 runs in his final spell of 4.5 overs and turning the match on its head.

Bangladesh national team captain Nazimul Hossain Shanto said, “I’m very happy. I’m proud of all the players and the way we played.”

“We’ve been working hard over the last few months and are slowly getting better at Test cricket. It’s one of the things we’ve always wanted to do.”

With this victory, Shanto equaled Mushfiqur Rahim’s record of seven Test wins as Bangladesh captain, reaching that milestone in just 17 matches compared to Mushfiqur’s 34.

Shandong’s batting brilliance

Bangladesh went into the final day at 152 for 3 with a 179-run lead, but faltered at a clutch of wickets despite Shanto’s 87 runs.

Bangladesh declared 240 for 9 in the second innings to give Pakistan a competitive target and a chance for the bowlers to take advantage of the deteriorating pitch.

Takin Ahmed beat opener Imam-ul-Haq with two hits, while Mehdi Hasan Miraz beat centurion Azan Awais, who was making his debut, with 15 hits.

Rana removed Pakistan captain Shan Masood for two and Fazal and Agha fought back with a fourth-wicket partnership, but Bangladesh’s bowlers proved their mettle on their home ground and secured victory in the final session of the day.

Lana landed the decisive blow. He drove Saud Shakir in behind before producing the match ball. He bowled Mohammad Rizwan 15 times with a blistering in-swinging yorker that clocked at 147 km/h (91.3 mph).

Rana trapped Noman Ali LBW, flicked Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mahmudul Hasan Joy completed a famous victory with a simple catch.

Pakistan captain Masood made no excuses for his team’s failure to capture key moments of the match.

“In the first innings, we needed to do better with the bat and ball,” he said. “When you take control of the game, you have to push the opponent away and we weren’t able to do that.”

Shanto stood out for his batting brilliance as he scored 101 runs in the first innings and guided Bangladesh to 413 runs.

Pakistan fought back for 386 in the first innings but conceded a narrow lead after off-spinner Mehdi returned figures of 102 for 5.

Laing played spoilsport on the third and fourth days of the Test, but lost several overs due to interruptions.

The second match begins in Sylhet on Saturday.
