Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola has admitted that the race for the Premier League title is now out of his control following a chaotic 3-3 draw with Everton.
“It’s not in our hands now, it was before, but now it’s no,” Guardiola said after Monday’s game.
“There are four games left in the Premier League (remaining). It’s going to be a pretty similar game and we’ll see what happens.”
City had a chance to level on points with leaders Arsenal after beating Everton on Monday and then beating Brentford five days later.
Instead, they find themselves five points behind, despite still having a game in hand and needing a shake-up from Arsenal.
Guardiola will now reflect on the fact that he took back one point instead of the three he earned at Liverpool’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
“It’s better than losing,” he said. “We’d rather win. We played for it and just showed what kind of team we are. We tried everything. The players were aggressive.”
Winger Jeremy Doku completed his double on the night with a dramatic 97th-minute equaliser, echoing his manager’s frustrations as he insists City have not given up on their beliefs, although there are still four league games left.
“It’s tough right now, but we still have a lot of games left and anything can happen,” Doc said. “We will continue to fight. We owe it to ourselves and our fans.”
City striker Erling Haaland, who scored in the 83rd minute, could be heard saying, “We can still try,” as he shook hands with his team-mates after the final whistle.
Following Saturday’s game against Brentford, City face Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Aston Villa in their final three league games.
Arsenal have a much easier schedule, at least on paper, with games against relegation-threatened West Ham United, already-relegated Burnley and Palace.
Although their hopes of winning the league have taken a huge hit, City still technically still have a chance of winning the domestic treble. They won the League Cup in March by defeating Arsenal and will face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 16th.
