The government has said it will continue to operate Sri Lanka Cricket’s administrative functions until reforms are implemented.

The Sri Lankan government has taken control of the country’s cricket board, saying it is a temporary measure to pave the way for “structural reforms”.

“All administrative functions of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will be temporarily placed under the purview of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports from today,” the ministry announced on Wednesday.

It added that a committee would be appointed soon “to address current issues in the cricket world and implement structural reforms”.

The SLC is the country’s richest sporting body but has been plagued by allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

The world governing body, the International Cricket Council, has suspended Sri Lanka for two months from 2023 to 2024 due to political interference in the running of the national board.

Following government intervention, four-time SLC chairman Shami Silva resigned on Tuesday along with the entire board.

Sri Lanka made an early withdrawal from the T20 World Cup, which was co-hosted with India in February-March.
