Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike had to be carried away on a stretcher during the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

France international Hugo Ekitike ruptured his Achilles tendon in Liverpool’s Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain and is expected to miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

French newspapers Le Parisien and L’Equipe reported the news of the 23-year-old’s injury on Wednesday.

The striker has scored 17 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69 million ($93.58 million) in July last year.

Ekitike’s Achilles tendon was pointed out to him by medical staff before he was carried off on a stretcher at Anfield. At Anfield, Liverpool lost the quarter-final second leg 2-0 and were eliminated from the competition with a 4-0 aggregate defeat on Tuesday night.

The French Football Federation (FFF) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The World Cup will be held from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Ekitike’s two international goals for France (in a World Cup qualifier against Ukraine and in a friendly against Brazil) came in France’s last four matches.

He has appeared in eight games in total, but has started three of the last six and is seen as the main replacement for Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé.
