World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev was defeated in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters by an opponent 80 ranks below him.

In the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters, Daniil Medvedev suffered an embarrassing 6-0, 6-0 loss to Matteo Berrettini as Alexander Zverev dug deep to defeat Cristian Garin.

Medevdev missed two break points, made 30 unforced errors and five double faults in the opening round and was completely out of sorts against Berrettini on Wednesday.

Medvedev had not won by more than two points in his previous 11 matches and his frustration boiled over in the second set, when he slammed his racket on the court four times.

Berrettini completed the double bagel victory in just 49 minutes, the first loss of his career for former world No. 1 Medvedev.

“I think it was one of the best performances of my life,” Berrettini said.

“I think I missed three shots in the whole match. It wasn’t easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons worked.”

The former Wimbledon runner-up, currently ranked 90th, will face Joao Fonseca in the last 16 after the Brazilian teenager defeated Arthur Rinderknek 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

World No. 3 Zverev, who is hoping to win all three clay-court Masters 1000 titles this week, made a late comeback to beat Chilean qualifier Garin 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Zverev reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami Open this year, but was on the verge of a shock exit after losing the first set and trailing 4-0 in the third.

Garin served the match when he led 5-3 in the deciding set, but Zverev broke and then won five games in a row to seal the victory.

He had to fend off three break points in a nervous 12th game to avoid a tiebreaker, but ultimately finished the job on his third match point.

The 28-year-old will face unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs, who defeated 2023 champion Andrei Rublev 6-4, 6-1, in the third round.

Zverev hasn’t won an ATP title since Munich 12 months ago, but the last of his seven Masters victories came in Paris in 2024.
