“He was taken by helicopter to Tauri Hospital in Sabadell, where he is being monitored in the intensive care unit with serious injuries.”
Spanish media reported that he lost control of his bike and suffered head injuries when it ran over a rock and collided with a car.
The promising 23-year-old finished 29th at last week’s Tour of Catalunya and 14th at last year’s Vuelta a España Grand Tour.
“We would like to express our full support and strength to Jaume and his family during this time and wish him a speedy and full recovery,” added Caja Rural-RGA.
Carapace undergoes perineal surgery
Former Olympic champion Richard Carapaz, meanwhile, underwent surgery for a perineal problem a month before the Giro d’Italia, but the Ecuadorian is aiming to be able to fight for a fourth podium in the race.
The 32-year-old, who won the Giro in 2019, was second in 2022 and third last year, posted on Instagram on Wednesday: “It wasn’t in the plan but it was handled in the best way possible.”
Carapaz, who won gold in the road race at the Tokyo Olympics, missed the Tour de France and Vuelta a España last year due to illness.
“From today I will be fully focused on recovering and getting back in top condition for the Giro,” added Carapaz.
