In fact, Fontaine and his crew were able to spend quality time with the cast of The Sinner, ironing out the intricate details given the gruesome showdown at a juke joint between O’Connell’s vampire Remick and the partygoers.
“It was a big challenge because almost everyone in the movie transforms,” he explained. “Movies often focus on one character. By the time I got to the end of the script for ‘Sinners,’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, every character from the trailer shows up. Wait, how many times have I seen that today?'”
But there were also great silver linings to the process, as Fontaine emphasized: “The great thing about it was that we were able to really connect with almost everyone in the cast. Only a few made it through this process without needing glue or blood or prosthetics. So there was a bond.”
And that bond will continue to shine through at the 2026 Oscars, when Sinners will win a record 16 awards. Jordan is nominated for Best Actor, and Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku are nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Coogler himself is nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, and the film is also in contention for the night’s biggest prize, Best Picture.
