Japan’s Ichikawa City Zoo denies

Don’t get frustrated watching viral videos about punching.

A Japanese zoo housing a beloved macaque monkey that was abandoned by its mother shortly after birth in July has addressed public concerns that the monkey was being “bullied” by fellow primates.

On March 10, the Ichikawa City Zoo reported on X (formerly Twitter), “We have received many concerns from both inside and outside Japan. At this time, there is no evidence that Punch has been attacked in a way that would threaten his survival.”

Instead, the park declared that groups of Japanese macaques “follow a strict hierarchical society,” where “dominant individuals exhibit ‘disciplined behavior’ toward their subordinates.”

The zoo continued, “These acts are different from ‘abuse’ of humans.” “These ‘training behaviors’ are not constant, and Punch spends most of the day peacefully. There are also increasing numbers of monkeys caring for and playing with Punch.”

And as the monkeys bond with other animals, they are spending less time with their stuffed orangutans, the organization said.
