google The next day, the company announced that it would continue to offer Anthropic’s artificial intelligence technology to customers outside of defense services. microsoft issued a similar statement to customers.

The announcements by two of the three major cloud infrastructure vendors come after the Department of Defense formally designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk.

“We understand that this decision does not prevent us from working with Anthropic on non-defense-related projects, and their products will continue to be available through our platforms, including Google Cloud,” a Google spokesperson said Friday.

AmazonThe public cloud leader has not yet commented on the matter.

Anthropic’s Claude model is available on Google Cloud via the Vertex AI platform. The search giant is also a key financial backer of Anthropic, agreeing to make an additional $1 billion investment in January 2025, on top of its previous $2 billion stake.

Anthropic uses Google Cloud’s AI infrastructure to train its models and recently expanded its partnership by gaining access to up to 1 million of Google’s custom tensor processing units (TPUs).

After Anthropic last week refused to agree to terms and conditions requested by the Pentagon, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to stop using the company’s technology, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said cooperation with Anthropic would end in six months. CNBC confirmed that the US used human models in the recent attack on Iran.

Some defense technology companies have told employees to stop using Anthropic’s Claude model and switch to alternatives such as rival OpenAI.

Microsoft became the first major partner to say it would continue working with Anthropic after the Department of Defense’s action.

“Our attorneys have reviewed this designation and have concluded that Anthropic products, including Claude, remain available to non-Department of the Army customers,” Microsoft said late Thursday.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said Thursday that the company has “no choice” but to challenge the supply chain risk designation in court.

—CNBC’s Jordan Novet contributed to this report.
