Amazon‘s website and shopping app went down for some users on Thursday, leaving consumers unable to check out, access account information or view product prices.
Troubles on the site spiked around 2 p.m. ET, and more than 22,000 users had reported problems two hours later, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks crash reports.
The issue appeared to be mostly resolved by 8pm ET. Amazon said the incident was caused by “software code deployment.”
“We regret that some customers may have temporarily experienced issues while shopping,” Amazon spokeswoman Jenny Bryant said in a statement. “The issues related to software code deployment have been resolved and the website and app are now running smoothly.”
Users also reported issues with ordering and viewing their purchase history on Amazon Fresh, the company’s grocery delivery service.
The glitch comes as Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing arm, is grappling with outages after drone attacks damaged three data centers in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
Iranian state media reported that Amazon’s data center in Bahrain was targeted by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for supporting US “military and intelligence activities.”
Amazon announced Thursday that its cloud services are functioning normally.
