Trains serving central Italy were delayed for more than an hour on Saturday in the latest apparent act of sabotage during the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Services between Naples in the south and the capital Rome were affected, and there were also delays on routes north to Florence.

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini blamed those behind the incident after a similar problem occurred on the network last Saturday and another less serious incident midweek.

The suspension comes as Italy will host the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6 to 22.

“These are hateful criminal acts targeting workers and Italy,” Salvini said in a statement.

“I hope no one will minimize or try to justify these crimes that put lives at risk,” he added.

Authorities on Saturday were investigating possible incidents of vandalism, including the burning of cables on part of the high-speed line between Rome and Naples, as well as two other cases of vandalism between the capital and Florence.

An anarchist group claimed responsibility for an attack on the network on Saturday, the first day of the convention, that damaged rail infrastructure near Bologna and caused delays of up to two and a half hours on high-speed rail, intercity and regional services.
