Live updates: Trump administration reveals plans for Venezuela and oil

Sen. Tim Kaine (center) speaks to the media after a private conference with senators regarding the detention of Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 7.

The Senate is scheduled to vote this morning on a measure that would limit President Donald Trump’s war powers in Venezuela.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, told CNN on Tuesday that he is still trying to find the votes needed to pass a resolution that would require President Donald Trump to authorize Congress to carry out hostilities with Venezuela, but that there are “about a dozen” Republicans who support or are considering the resolution.

Kaine’s war powers resolution, co-sponsored by Republican Sen. Rand Paul, would need a total of four Republican senators to pass in the chamber. While the bill is unlikely to pass the House or garner enough support for a veto-proof majority, a successful vote in the Senate would serve as a symbolic rebuke to President Trump’s handling of the Venezuelan conflict and Saturday’s detention of Maduro and Maduro.

Kaine said Tuesday it was too early to tell whether there would be enough support for the plan.

Yesterday, Democratic and Republican senators agreed that Trump administration officials laid out a detailed plan for the future of the U.S.’s plan to control Venezuelan oil in a secret briefing, but partisans were divided on whether the plan would work.
