A giant in the gaming world has fallen.
Vince Zampella, co-creator of “Call of Duty” and creator of popular games such as “Titanfall” and “Apex Legends,” died on December 21 in a car accident in Southern California. He passed away at the age of 55.
“This is an unimaginable loss and our hearts go out to Vince’s family, his loved ones and everyone affected by his work,” his employer Electronic Arts said in a statement to the Guardian on December 22nd. “Vince’s influence on the video game industry was deep and far-reaching.”
The video game publisher went on to say, “A friend, colleague, leader, and visionary creator, his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world. His legacy will continue to shape the way games are made and players connect for generations to come.”
Zampella was involved in a single-vehicle crash in the San Gabriel Mountains near Los Angeles around 12:45 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The car veered off the road and crashed into a concrete barrier, trapping the driver, identified by NBC Los Angeles as Zampella, inside and bursting into flames.
