He built one of Airbnb’s most popular rental properties for just $90,000

Chris Bloomfield, 50, had been in the carpentry contracting business for years before deciding to use what he learned working on other people’s homes to help secure a lucrative future for his family.

In 2015, Bloomfield and his wife purchased five acres of land in Remsen, New York for $27,000. It was close to where Bloomfield grew up and not far from the nearby property owned by his brother.

“I realized that carpentry is based on knowledge and experience, and I couldn’t pass that on to my children,” Bloomfield told CNBC Make It. “So we needed to build something that would at least give them a head start on borrowing and something that would generate additional income.”

Shortly after closing on the property, Bloomfield said he began commuting every weekend from his parents’ home in Connecticut to work on building an A-frame cabin. At the time, this was the style I chose because I thought it was the most cost-effective.

“I love A-frame construction. It’s beautiful and timeless,” Bloomfield says. “As a carpenter, I did almost everything myself, so I wanted to build it sooner.”

Bloomfield built much of the A-frame cabin himself.

Bloomfield did most of the work himself, but he hired outside help to drill the well, an electrician to wire the shed, and someone to hang the sheetrock.

It took Bloomfield three years to complete work on the one-bedroom, one-bathroom A-frame cabin, and the total cost was about $90,000, he says.

Bloomfield said building the A-frame was challenging because he commuted eight hours round trip and 12 hours on weekends while working as a full-time contractor. Despite the challenges, he says he loved working on building the cabin because he knew it was just the beginning of a vision to build multiple rental properties on the property.

“The process was great for me. I loved being here. I loved being able to create whatever I wanted to create. I really enjoyed having freedom,” Bloomfield said.

One of the standout features of the A-frame cabin is the electric king bed, inspired by Bloomfield’s wife, that can slide into the woods to sleep under the stars.

“I wanted to sleep outside with my wife. She doesn’t like bugs or camping, so I was trying to give her things that I liked. I wanted her to have that experience and get into the things that I like, and I wanted to enjoy the things that I like to do,” he says.

The A-frame is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin.

The A-frame also has a fully equipped kitchen, fireplace, fire pit, and multiple decks. When this cabin was first listed on Airbnb in 2018, the current rate was $60 per night. Broomfield currently uses dynamic pricing, so rates range from $380 to $700 per night.

Showing all the effort Bloomfield put into his A-frame cabin, word spread quickly after he listed it on Airbnb. This is one of Airbnb’s “Most Wanted” rental properties in New York. It’s also on guests’ favorite lists, earning Bloomfield the title of “Superhost,” according to an Airbnb representative.

According to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It, the A-frame cabin’s revenue in 2024 is $119,337, and estimated revenue in 2025 is $143,504.

After Bloomfield first opened his A-frame cabin as a short-term rental, he and his team built the treehouse in 13 weeks. What makes this cabin so special is that it sits 14 feet above the ground. To get there, renters must cross a suspension bridge on the property.

An Airbnb representative said the treehouse ranks in the top 10% of Airbnb listings based on ratings, reviews, and trustworthiness.

In 2024, Treehouse Cabin will bring in $151,966, and this year, Bloomfield estimates that number will rise to $150,562.

The A-frame cabin has an open design with a deck and indoor fireplace.

Shortly after listing the treehouse on Airbnb, Bloomfield completed Birch Falls Spa Cabin, a studio with an 18-foot-long indoor waterfall. In 2024, Birch Falls Spa Cabin will generate $120,227 in revenue, and Bloomfield’s estimated 2025 revenue is $120,890.

He named his business Evergreen Cabins, a combination of all the rental properties he built on five acres. As of September 2025, Evergreen Cabins has generated $2.1 million in revenue since the first property was listed as a rental in 2018, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It.

Bloomfield said he now makes about $400,000 a year in revenue from rental properties and was able to retire from the contract in 2021.

The cabin has a fully equipped kitchen and a dining table that seats four.

Since retiring, Bloomfield’s daily routine consists of supervising staff, designing new cabins, and developing future plans for Evergreen Cabins.

“There’s always something that pushes me to do the next thing. I can’t sit around and do nothing. My family is a huge part of my inspiration and drive. In the end, they will own this world,” he says.

“While I don’t have any concrete plans for Evergreen’s legacy, I know it will be something that inspires and helps people, and my children will be a part of that.”
